The OECS Celebrates Saint Kitts and Nevis on its 43rd Independence Anniversary

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) joins the Government and people of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in celebrating its 43rd Independence Anniversary as the Federation reflects on its journey as an independent nation and looks ahead to new opportunities for national and regional development.

In his Independence message, OECS Director General Didacus Jules extended congratulations to the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis, emphasising the importance of unity, shared purpose and collective action in shaping the Federation’s future.

Quoting Helen Keller, Dr. Jules opened his message with a powerful reminder of the value of solidarity:

“We live by each other and for each other. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

The sentiment closely reflects this year’s Independence theme, “One People, One Vision, Endless Possibility: Independence 43”, which Dr. Jules described as capturing “the spirit required to shape the next chapter of the Federation’s development.”

He noted that the theme places unity at the centre of national progress and recognises the possibilities that can emerge when people are united by a common purpose.

Dr. Jules highlighted the rich diversity that contributes to the identity of Saint Kitts and Nevis, pointing to the distinct histories of the two islands, the diversity of its communities and the enduring connections of the Federation’s diaspora.

“These different experiences form part of a shared national story and demonstrate that diversity, when joined by a common sense of belonging and purpose, can be a source of enduring strength.”

The 43rd Independence anniversary also comes at a consequential moment for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as countries navigate climate pressures, economic volatility, changing patterns of trade and investment, rapid technological transformation and geopolitical uncertainty.

Dr. Jules acknowledged that these challenges require foresight and adaptability, while also presenting opportunities for new approaches to sustainable development, economic resilience and the empowerment of future generations.

Dr. Jules also highlighted Saint Kitts and Nevis’ role within the OECS family, describing the Federation as a “valued and committed partner in our integration movement.”

Its participation in regional initiatives contributes to a stronger Eastern Caribbean and reinforces the region’s collective capacity to address common challenges, pursue sustainable development and advance the interests of Small Island Developing States internationally.
