Strengthening trade through Agriculture

IICA Agribusiness Specialist meets OECS Director General

IICA Representative in the Eastern Caribbean, Mr. John King, this week paid a courtesy call on OECS Director General Dr. Didacus Jules. The purpose of the visit was to introduce Mr. Allister Glean, the new International Specialist in Agri-business and Value Chains at the IICA Office in Saint Lucia. Mr. Glean met the Director General and Staff of the Economic Affairs Division of the OECS Commission.

The OECS is one of the key partners of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). IICA works very closely with its member states in Latin America and the Caribbean to improve agriculture and rural development, towards achieving competitive and sustainable agriculture and food security in the Americas.

The Director General and IICA officials discussed priority areas where IICA could provide support to OECS Member States.  These include, strengthening intra-regional trade, greater emphasis on youth and women in agriculture, and the free circulation of goods within the OECS Economic Union.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is an International Organisation dedicated to economic harmonisation and integration, protection of human and legal rights, and the encouragement of good governance among independent and non-independent countries in the Eastern Caribbean. The OECS came into being on June 18th 1981, when seven Eastern Caribbean countries signed a treaty agreeing to cooperate with each other while promoting unity and solidarity among its Members. The Treaty became known as the Treaty of Basseterre, so named in honour of the capital city of St. Kitts and Nevis where it was signed. The OECS today, currently has eleven members, spread across the Eastern Caribbean comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
