OECS Media Release

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission hosted a virtual flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of independence of Antigua and Barbuda, which took place on November 1, 1981.

Participants included Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS, and other officials from OECS institutions headquartered in Saint Lucia. The event also featured Elder Lincoln Auguste from Calvary and Community Baptist Churches, Saint Lucia, and members of the Saint Lucia Cadet Corps.

This year’s celebration theme, “Antigua and Barbuda: From Community Collaboration to Global Gains,” reflects the commitment of the nation to foster unity and progress within its communities.

Following the flag-raising, Elder Lincoln Auguste led a prayer for the nation, invoking blessings and unity for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Dr. Didacus Jules shared encouraging remarks, reinforcing the spirit of collaboration and growth that defines Antigua and Barbuda’s journey since independence. He highlighted several of the nation’s recent achievements including its commendable hosting of the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States and their booming, adaptive tourism industry.

Dr. Jules said,

“Antigua and Barbuda has continually shown what can be achieved through vision, tenacity, and a spirit of collective action. The story of this country over the past 43 years is one of unwavering determination and success in overcoming challenges that are often unique to small island developing states.”

To commemorate this 43rd anniversary of independence, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda contributed a written statement to the OECS for the virtual flag-raising ceremony which can be read here.

The OECS Commission wishes Antigua and Barbuda a wonderful independence celebration.
