OECS Media Release

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) extends warm congratulations to the Government and people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on the occasion of the nation’s 47th Anniversary of Independence, celebrated on October 27, 2026, under the theme “Hand in Hand, Uplifting Our Nation.”

In his commemorative address, OECS Director General, Dr. Didacus Jules, highlighted the importance of unity, shared responsibility, and collective action in advancing national development. Reflecting on the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together,” the speech underscored the interconnectedness of communities and the role of every citizen in shaping the nation’s future.

Forty-seven years after attaining independence on October 27, 1979, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continues to demonstrate resilience, perseverance and a strong commitment to progress.

Dr. Jules noted, “The strength of national development lies in bringing those contributions together in service of a shared future.”

In his speech, he also reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges, including climate vulnerability, economic uncertainty, and sustainable development.

Emphasising the value of regional unity, the speech stated, “For small states, regional cooperation is therefore an instrument of strength.”

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines remains an important contributor to the regional integration movement, reinforcing the understanding that collective action strengthens the prospects of every Member State.

The OECS joins the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in celebrating 47 years of independence and wishes the nation continued progress and prosperity as its people move forward, hand in hand, uplifting their nation.
