Key Meeting in Martinique to Advance Plans for the 2025 Kréyol Basketball Championship

7 February, 2025 – Fort-de-France, Martinique — The Caribbean sports community takes another step forward as Marvin Jno Baptiste, President of the NGO Caribbean Sport & Sustainable Development, met today with the President of the local Government of Martinique, Serge Letchimy and the President of the Martinique basketball league, Raymond Petit-Frere to discuss strategic plans for the highly anticipated 2025 Kréyol Basketball Championship.

The discussions, held in Fort-de-France, focused on finalizing tournament preparations and strengthening regional collaboration to elevate the level of basketball in the Caribbean. One of the key highlights of the meeting was the announcement that the Central Conference of the Kréyol Basketball Championship will be hosted in Martinique in June 2025, reinforcing the island’s commitment to developing high-level basketball competitions and promoting sports tourism in the region.

The Martinique Team Qualifier Tournament, currently underway, is a crucial step in determining the teams that will represent the island in the upcoming championship. This qualification process highlights the tournament’s growing competitiveness and the importance of fostering young talent as well as professional basketball in the French Antilles.

President Marvin Jno Baptiste expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, stating:

“This meeting marks a significant step in solidifying Martinique’s role in the 2025 Kréyol Basketball Championship. With strong support from the local government and the basketball league, we are confident that this edition of the championship will set new benchmarks for sports development in the Caribbean.”

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is an International Organisation dedicated to economic harmonisation and integration, protection of human and legal rights, and the encouragement of good governance among independent and non-independent countries in the Eastern Caribbean. The OECS came into being on June 18th 1981, when seven Eastern Caribbean countries signed a treaty agreeing to cooperate with each other while promoting unity and solidarity among its Members. The Treaty became known as the Treaty of Basseterre, so named in honour of the capital city of St. Kitts and Nevis where it was signed. The OECS today, currently has eleven members, spread across the Eastern Caribbean comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Martinique and Guadeloupe.
