Dominica Celebrates 48th Anniversary of Independence Honouring the Country's Legacy and Future

OECS Media Release

Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) congratulates the Government and people of the Commonwealth of Dominica on the occasion of the country's 48th Anniversary of Independence, highlighting its journey of resilience, cultural preservation and commitment to a sustainable future.

In his message marking the occasion, Dr. Jules reflected on this year's theme, “Our Journey, Our Legacy, Our Future,” noting that it represents an opportunity to celebrate the country's achievements while looking ahead to the opportunities and challenges that will shape its development.

Referencing Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit's words following Hurricane Maria in 2017, Dr. Jules said:

“We, the children of Dominica, have shown the world that disaster is finite; but, hope is infinite!”

He noted that the statement captures the enduring spirit of the Dominican people, whose determination and confidence have remained steadfast despite adversity.

Honouring the journey and the preserved legacy of the Dominican people, Dr. Jules also highlighted its rich cultural heritage, the contributions of the Kalinago People and the importance of protecting the island's natural environment. He underscored the country's commitment to climate resilience and its longstanding contribution to regional integration as a founding member of the OECS.

Reflecting on the importance of the country's future, Dr. Jules stated:

“For Dominica, as for the wider Eastern Caribbean, the future presents both significant opportunities and complex challenges. Climate change, economic uncertainty and rapid technological transformation continue to shape the development prospects of our small states. Dominica’s commitment to becoming a climate-resilient nation is particularly instructive in this regard, reflecting a determination not merely to recover from adversity, but to strengthen the communities and institutions upon which sustainable development depends.”

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States congratulates Dominica on this significant anniversary, celebrating the nation's rich heritage, recognising its potential and reaffirming the importance of a shared commitment to a prosperous and sustainable future.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is an International Organisation dedicated to economic harmonisation and integration, protection of human and legal rights, and the encouragement of good governance among independent and non-independent countries in the Eastern Caribbean. The OECS came into being on June 18th 1981, when seven Eastern Caribbean countries signed a treaty agreeing to cooperate with each other while promoting unity and solidarity among its Members. The Treaty became known as the Treaty of Basseterre, so named in honour of the capital city of St. Kitts and Nevis where it was signed. The OECS today, currently has twelve members, spread across the Eastern Caribbean comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint Martin.
