CaribNOG to Host Regional Internet Security Event CaribNOG17 in Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados -- The Caribbean Network Operators’ Group (CARIBNOG), a volunteer-based association of internet engineering, architecture and operations professionals, will be hosting its seventeenth regional meeting, CaribNOG 17, in Barbados.  Taking place April 10-12 at the Barbados Hilton, CaribNOG 17 will provide attendees with three days of educational and networking opportunities focused on cybersecurity, network resilience and cloud computing.

CaribNOG also announced the return of five collaborative partners, including the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Latin American Internet Registry (LACNIC), and the Internet Society (ISOC).

CaribNOG is a non-profit, engineering, educational and operational forum for the coordination of computer and Internet network operations in the Caribbean.  The association relies upon the support of its sponsors and partners to produce its bi-annual conferences and ongoing training workshops and communications.

The CaribNOG 17 keynote address will be presented by Edward McNair, Executive Director at the North American Network Operators Group, NANOG, and the co-founder of Kaskadian, a firm that provides branding, marketing and sales support for startups and new businesses. Feature address speakers include John Sweeting, Senior Director of Registration Service at ARIN and a former Director of Network Engineering at Time Warner Cable; and Mark Kosters, Chief Technology Officer at ARIN, who oversees the development and operation of a network infrastructure for ARIN.

“From its inception in 2012, CaribNOG’s mission has been to enable the ongoing development of an open and secure internet by providing a forum that inspires, educates and empowers members of the Caribbean networking community,” said CaribNOG Executive Director and co-founder, Bevil Wooding.

“We look forward to gathering in Barbados to continue the tradition of knowledge sharing and human networking that has come to define the CaribNOG community.”

“The topics to be covered address the real priorities and challenges of Internet development in the Caribbean. By strengthening the region’s community of network administrators and specialists, we are strengthening Caribbean networks and supporting Caribbean development,” added Wooding.

Sessions at CaribNOG will feature presentations covering a wide range of topics, including IPV6 deployment best practices, autonomous network design techniques, peering and Internet exchange point (IXP) trends, cloud hosting and content delivery networks, routing strategies and cybersecurity trends and tips.

“CaribNOG provides a forum for expanding the knowledge and practical silks of its members,” said Stephen Lee, Program Coordinator and co-founder of CaribNOG.

“At each CaribNOG event, the community shares ways of using new and emerging tools to manage networks and defend against different types of attacks. These are demonstrated through hands-on training sessions and expert presentations, as participants interact with security and networking experts from North America, Europe and across the CaribNOG community.”

CARIBNOG members are typically drawn from the core engineering and product staffs of major North American carriers, content providers, hosting and cloud companies, multi-tenant data centers and interconnection service providers.  Membership is available to anyone with an interest in internet operations, engineering or research who wishes to further education and knowledge-sharing within the internet operations community.

Attendance at CaribNOG 17 is at no cost, and lunch and refreshments will be provided for participants.  Interested persons can register online at www.caribnog.org.
