Antigua and Barbuda Celebrates 45 Years of Nationhood, Unity and Progress

OECS Media Release

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) congratulates the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda as the nation celebrates 45 years of Independence under the theme, “Renaissance: Rooted in Pride, Bounded by Prosperity for All.”

In a congratulatory speech, OECS Director General Dr. Didacus Jules reflected on the significance of the milestone, highlighting the importance of national pride, renewal, shared prosperity and regional cooperation in shaping the country’s future. He said that the theme is a fitting call for renewal, while embracing innovation and new approaches to development.

Dr. Jules invoked the words of Antigua and Barbuda’s first Prime Minister, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Sr., “we are determined to marry principle with practicality”.

“That sentiment continues to speak to the work of nation-building, honouring the ideals upon which independence was founded while giving those ideals practical expression in the lives and opportunities of the people,” Dr. Jules stated.

He noted that the sentiment remains relevant 45 years after Independence, alongside this year's theme, which is a fitting call for renewal, while embracing innovation and new approaches to development.

The Director General also emphasised that prosperity must extend beyond economic growth to create meaningful opportunities for all, particularly young people, entrepreneurs and communities. He linked this vision to the nation’s motto, “Each Endeavouring, All Achieving,” which reflects the importance of individual contributions to collective progress.

Dr. Jules further highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s longstanding contribution to the OECS integration movement, stressing that regional solidarity remains essential as small island states navigate climate vulnerability, global economic uncertainty and other shared challenges.

"This principle also carries significance beyond national borders. Antigua and Barbuda has long been an integral member of the OECS family, contributing its voice, experience and perspective to the advancement of our integration movement," said Dr. Jules.

On behalf of the OECS, Dr. Jules extended sincere congratulations to the Government and people of Antigua and Barbuda, reaffirming the importance of collective effort and regional cooperation for the nation and the region.
