OECS Media Release

On Monday, June 23, 2025, Her Excellency Brenda Wills, Ambassador-designate of Canada to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), officially presented her Letter of Credence to Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS, during a virtual ceremony. The event was attended virtually by Heads of Embassies and Missions accredited to the OECS, along with other distinguished guests.

During her remarks, Ambassador Wills highlighted Canada’s long-standing commitment to the OECS region, identifying key areas of collaboration including international assistance programming, trade, tourism, and academic linkages. She emphasised Canada’s interest in deepening engagement with OECS Member States through increased opportunities in infrastructure development, agri-food, and renewable energy projects.

In reaffirming Canada’s support for enhancing regional security and promoting shared prosperity across the Eastern Caribbean, Ambassador Wills stated,

Canada remains committed to working with the OECS to achieve these goals. Our long-term objective in the Caribbean is to help create a more inclusive, prosperous, and resilient community that offers opportunities for all its citizens. I look forward to working with you and your team to enhance our evolving relationship. I am confident that Canada and the OECS will continue to collaborate to build a more inclusive, prosperous, and secure atmosphere.”

The Director-General welcomed Ambassador Wills and expressed appreciation for Canada's continued partnership and support to the OECS, particularly in areas aligned with the region’s development priorities. He said,

“This occasion provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on our shared accomplishments to date and to look ahead to the possibilities for even greater collaboration in the future. I am particularly pleased with the warm and productive relations between the High Commission of Canada and the OECS Commission, which reflect the depth and strength of our relationship.”

The ceremony was immediately followed by a courtesy meeting where the High Commissioner and the OECS Commission discussed ongoing matters and mapped out areas for future cooperation.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is an International Organisation dedicated to economic harmonisation and integration, protection of human and legal rights, and the encouragement of good governance among independent and non-independent countries in the Eastern Caribbean. The OECS came into being on June 18th 1981, when seven Eastern Caribbean countries signed a treaty agreeing to cooperate with each other while promoting unity and solidarity among its Members. The Treaty became known as the Treaty of Basseterre, so named in honour of the capital city of St. Kitts and Nevis where it was signed. The OECS today, currently has twelve members, spread across the Eastern Caribbean comprising Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint Martin.
